In the context of Choreographic Convention, Suvi Kemppainen celebrates the mundane and otherworldly realities of choreographic labor in studio: a study of practicing. During a 45-minute performative setting, Kemppainen will encounter existing choreographic modalities within their own work, including textual, sonic, and corporeal materials. The structure consists of shorter loops of material that they will repeat. Through the form of the loop, they look at repetition not as a return to the same, but as a disturbance of the same. Each time the loop turns, the form is repeated, but the conditions have changed: the relationships (architectural, spatial, sonic, and textual) have changed, the space has changed, time has passed and Kemppainen’s own position within the choreography has shifted. Repetition becomes not only a method of preservation or reproduction, but also a practice of refusal: a refusal of the demand for sameness, and a way of opening, allowing something to remain while simultaneously allowing it to transform and open to worldly and otherworldly dimensions. Here, the study of practicing becomes a repertoire: a collection that can be revisited, disturbed, refused, and reconfigured.
